Every community needs to plan, but the issues and driving factors that face each community are unique. The Borough Planning Commission and liaisons from Borough Council are jointly serving as the steering committee For the Comprehensive Plan. One of the first activities was to ask each member in attendance their expectation of results for the Comprehensive Plan. Here are their answers.
1. Preserve, conserve and restore traditional neighborhoods impacted by the student community.
2. Create walkable communities in Indiana Borough.
3. Develop a higher level of cooperation and communication between the Borough, White Township and Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
4. Ascertain the common direction for the Community from the Citizens, Borough Staff and Borough Elected Officials.
5. Create an economically vibrant Downtown.
Establish harmonious relationships between our diverse communities.
6. Preserve, maintain and enhance our recreation resources.
7. Ensure Tax Base and public service sustainability for the community
We will explore each of these in later posts.

I attended the Open House meeting last night. While I love the idea of a "sound, prosperous future" for our community, an "economically vibrant downtown" with everything "connected by pedestrian friendly transportation networks", I think that we need to fix our serious problems before we build pretty sidewalks... Marsh Run, for instance, is a serious problem. Yet, there are NO concrete plans to fix the run-offs that cause our basements to flood every 4-5 years. Last night I felt like I was shuffled from person to person to as I tried to get an answer to my questions regarding Marsh Run. Our rep said it has to be the borough's decision to fix it. The Dept. of Public Works said I should talk to our representative. Zoning told me to talk to Public Works... And, please quit diverting funds earmarked for Marsh Run to IUP's projects. Keep your pretty new sidewalks. Make Marsh Run a priority and fix it!
